ドノヴァンは、イギリス人博物学者、図版制作者であり、博物学の全分野にわたる図鑑を制作したことで知られる。『英国自然誌』（1792-1816）全 10 巻に続く代表作は、熱帯アジア昆虫三部作といわれる 『中国昆虫史要説』（1798）、『インド昆虫史要説』（1800）、『オーストラリア昆虫史要説』（1805） である。ドノヴァンは学問上重要な発見を成しとげた人物ではないが、英国に博物学の思想を普及させることに大きな貢献をした。ドノヴァンの書物は人気を博し、よく売れた。だが、彼自身は後年回想録を著し、出版業者の暴利に比べ、自分が破産寸前だったことを述懐している。
