フランス語で刊行された動物誌の英訳本。原著者はクロード・ぺローをリーダーとする科学アカデミーの会員で、いずれも高名な解剖学者であった。ペローは 17 世紀フランスの医者で建築家。コルベールの命でウィルトルウィス『建築書』を仏訳したり、ルーヴル宮の列柱やパリ天文台の建築を手がけたりもしているが、医学の研究にも精を出し、とりわけ「パリ派」と呼ばれるチームを組んで、王立動物飼育所（現在の植物園）で死んだ動物の解剖を徹底的に遂行し、 成果を科学アカデミーの年報に報告した功績が大きい。『鵞鳥おばさんのお話』で有名なシャルル・ペロー（1628-1703）の兄であり、兄弟で文学史上に名高い「新旧論争」で近代派の論客としてボワローらと対立した。
