フーカーは商業を捨てて、博物学を研究し、1809 年、『アイスランド紀行』で評価をえた。1815年、植物学者ターナーの娘と結婚、同時にグラスゴーで植物学を講じて人気を博し、当地の植物園設立に奔走した。1840 年、王立植物園である「キュー・ガーデン」初代園長となる。当園は彼の努力で英国でも指折りの美しい植物園に成長。王立協会会員、リンネ協会の副会長も務める。英国における植物学の普及に対するフーカーの貢献には絶大なものがあった。
