オランダの寓意静物画のような植物図鑑である。古い植物図鑑に共通に現れる花の静物画のような絵柄は、19 世紀に入るとほとんど消滅する。こうした「四季」ものの連作でも、美術と博物誌は密接に結びつく。英国や、とりわけオランダのようなプロテスタント国に多く見られるが、一見、何の変哲もない静物画や写生に密やかな「死」の寓意が込められていることがある。
